Craft Story — From Wax to Brass, A 4,000-Year Tribal Legacy
Dhokra art is among the oldest known metalcasting traditions in the world, with roots tracing back over four millennia to the Indus Valley Civilization. Each piece is crafted using the ancient lost-wax method: artisans first sculpt the form in beeswax, layering it with natural clay to create a mould. When heated, the wax flows out, and molten brass fills the cavity — capturing every handcrafted detail.
Once removed from the mould, the sculpture is refined, textured, and polished entirely by hand. The distinctive beaded chains, cross-hatched saddle, and ornate facial patterns seen on this Nandhi are signatures of Dhokra artistry, passed down through generations of tribal metalworkers.
This piece is not just a sculpture — it is a living fragment of India’s tribal heritage, carrying within it the rhythm, skill, and spirit of an unbroken craft tradition.
